BABii
Daredevil 2000 is a continuation of the writing style she began with 2022 collaborative mixtape Screamer, which saw the producer and vocalist writing from the perspective of her younger sister and their struggle with BPD. On Daredevil 2000 she pushes that conceptual approach even further, taking an abstract look at the idea of evil and projecting it into her own imagined idea of hell. Through this creative exercise, BABii asks challenging questions about what pushes people to transgress while also exploring her personal relationships with those who society deems unwanted or unacceptable.
Across the album, BABii enters something akin to Dante’s Inferno, exploring the origins of violence and criminality and how hell relates to the real world. Each song corresponds to a separate sin and comes with a villainous criminal attached. These include hooligans, gargoyles, goblins, and a Trash Spirit Clown named Tito Von Bricabrac. All exist in the fantastical Nevaworld, a futuristic hellscape that the album exists in.
She gathered producers Warpstr, Samuel Organ, Mun Sing, Iglooghost, and Pholo at Prah Studios in Margate, Kent to finish the album. Reference points in the recording process for Daredevil 2000’s punchy and abrasive sound included Kanye West’s dark masterpiece Yeezus, as well as Jam City and Mumdance. The album touches on classic grime instrumentals, fluorescent bassline, UKG, R&B, and Detroit cybercrime scam rap for influence while sounding utterly unique.
A compelling and confronting teller of stories both dreamlike and real, BABii’s nomadic and creative upbringing laid the foundations for her DIY and daring experimental approach to creation. Since her 2019 debut album HiiDE and GLOO collective collaborative album XYZ, 2021 sophomore album MiiRROR and 2023 collaborative mixtape, Screamer, this accomplished multidisciplinary producer, songwriter, vocalist and visual artist has been consistently championed by everyone from Crack, Mixmag, Dazed, The Observer, The Line of Best Fit, i-D, NPR and on the airwaves by the likes of Tom Ravenscroft, Lauren Laverne and Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, 1Xtra.
A conceptual artist both sonically and visually, BABii’s unique and instantly recognisable, mellifluous and nymph like vocals blended with textured and challenging productions have gained her a loyal following of fans in the industry too, leading to collaborations with the likes of Dorian Electra, Heavee, BbyMutha, Catnapp, Umru, Lil Mariko, Jianbo, TWST, Pregoblin & more. She’s toured all over the world hitting festivals from Arts Electronica, Boomtown, End of The Road, LEV festival, PC Music’s 10th Anniversary Party and more alongside headline tours in China, USA, UK and EU.
Last year she released her collaborative mixtape “SCREAMER”, featuring collaborations with a wealth of influential producerssuch asIglooghost, umru (Charli XCX, Dorian Electra etc), SV1, Jennifer Walton (Kero Kero Bonito) and Warpstr (Yung Kayo, Yeat). SCREAMER was created both sides of the Atlantic however it took a heavy influence from British dance music with musical touchstones from bassline, garage and DnB. This release saw support from the likes of BBC Radio 1 (Future Sounds track of the week and live session, plus numerous plays on Future Sounds and Jaguar), BBC Radio 6 (Freakzone mix and numerous spot plays), Rinse FM, Soundcloud, Dazed and more.
In 2021 her concept album “MiiRROR” came out with an accompanying book and ARG (Alternate Reality Game), both written and designed by herself. The album received strong support from The Guardian, Resident Advisor, was playlisted on BBC Radio 6 Music, i-D, Electronic Beats, The Independent, Hunger, Dummy Mag, Loud & Quiet, NPR, Anthony Fantano, BBC Radio 1 and more. “MiiRROR” saw one of the most imaginative and immersive new voices in the UK music underground invite you to step through the looking glass of her unusual childhood via sound, story and image.
In 2019 she released her acclaimed debut LP ‘HiiDE’ as well as ‘XYZ’, a collaborative LP with Iglooghost and Kai Whiston while completing tours with Chk Chk Chk (!!!) and WHY?.
