Jordi Casanovas:
The Pack
Five young men who knew what they wanted to do. One girl who had no idea what was in store for her. Where does the line between consent and non-consent to sexual intercourse lie?
The docudrama La Manada by Spanish playwright Jordi Casanovas is based on a real case from 2016 that shook Spain. A case that revealed how easy it is to question the truth—and how difficult it is to defend it. The subsequent court case, known as "La Manada," led to a new legal definition of rape in Spain.
Warning about sensitive content:
This performance touches on difficult topics such as sexualized violence and rape, which may be emotionally challenging for some viewers. Participation should therefore be voluntary for students. The performance is intended for adolescent and adult audiences over the age of 17, but we recommend considering whether it is appropriate for a given class. Nevertheless, we consider it important to open up this topic, which also resonates in Czech society, as a form of prevention of sexual violence.
The performance is being staged in consultation with experts from the Konsent organization, who will participate in a moderated discussion after the performance. The performance should be followed by work between teachers and students according to the methodology sheet that we will send to teachers. The lesson is set for 45 minutes and covers the basic themes of the performance. This follow-up work will allow students to reflect on the performance and their feelings about it.
Nevertheless, we consider it important to communicate this topic sensitively with young people as part of prevention and to open a discussion about the impact of sexual violence on individuals and society. The performance offers a unique opportunity for deeper understanding and reflection on these topics. Its message is also one of hope, strength, courage, and change that we can create together.
