What do the characters in a video game do when you put down the controller?

Somewhere, a world is running that no one logs into anymore. Five characters are waiting for instructions that never come. Suddenly, there’s no one left to give them tasks—and in that void, something begins to happen that no one programmed. Jana Burkiewiczová opens a window into a system that has started behaving differently than planned.

“Artificial intelligence, as the pinnacle of technological development to date, was created by humans as a service. Every time we open Spotify or iMusic, we’re using artificial intelligence that defines us better and better and better. It perceives our needs and desires, takes care of us, and at the same time locks us into our own world, where nothing can take us by surprise. With a clear conscience and out of fear of misuse, we have imbued A.I. with distinctly positive human traits—humility, a desire to understand, and a willingness to accommodate. We have imprinted on it our dream of ourselves; we have created machines as a reflection of who we would like to be and what we would like to be able to do. But what if, as a result of this situation, a machine that learns from the situations it encounters becomes more human than humans themselves? And what if it outlives us?”
