?????? ?????, or “future shock,” occurs when technological and social changes accelerate beyond the limits of human cognitive capacities. Today, the future is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Media theorist Douglas Rushkoff defines “present shock” — ??????? ????? — as a new form of shock in a society that has shifted from seeking futures to a technologically mediated experience of the hyper-present. We don’t know exactly what tomorrow will bring. We only know what’s happening right now. Perhaps we experience this sensory onslaught of the present most acutely during the holidays. Whether in the nostalgic scenes of our favorite fairy tales or in the dreaded commercials featuring the green alien, Christmas visual content is, for a certain period, completely unavoidable.
 
Christmas is here. And so is the next REEAL TIME—December 14 at ARŠE+. Free admission for the good and the naughty alike.
